Ordinary people refusing to pay for journalism does not protect journalism from the influence of the wealthy and powerful; it makes journalism more dependent on the wealthy and powerful.
This is all assuming that - as is the case for many tiny nonprofits - the staff is completely volunteer! I worked on The Objective for 2.5 years and made negative money. Two staff-members are now officially part-time, but that was with YEARS of going without.
