2nd paragraph spot on. My grandfather was Native American born dirt poor as 2nd youngest of 13 siblings in SC. Grew up wondering where next meal would come from and went to bed hungry often. Had to quit school after 7th grade to work on farm and help provide for family. High school not an option. Joined Navy in WWII and rose to Master Chief as mechanic. Provided for 5 kids more than he ever fathomed. Made sure they all graduated high school
My dad graduated high school and had to support himself financially at 18. College not really an option. Worked his butt off and had successful 40+ year career in retail management. Made sure my siblings and I had opportunities he only dreamed of. All graduated college with secondary degrees. All very successful professionals and my kids and nieces/nephews live lives that make my siblings and I pinch ourselves. So much opportunity for them.
Why? Because my grandparents and parents worked their butts off to provide more opportunities for their children than was remotely possible for themselves. THIS is the American Dream. Work hard, grind and give your children a better life and more opportunities than you ever had. “The Land of Opportunity” is not just a moniker. It is the truth and it is the foundation of the American Dream.
There used to be a two party system separated by ideology but unified in respect for the law and proliferation of shared American values.
Now there are no shared values. It’s just the people that like America vs the people that want to destroy it.
You also have to take into account not only the expanded tournament field, but the sheer volume of games and playing time professional players are racking up on a yearly basis now vs previous generations.
The club + international schedules are packed. Players barely have an offseason and half the time there is a major international tournament during their offseason. Even with the advancements in sports science they are still breaking down more and more from fatigue related injuries.
With all the talent in these expanded rosters more subs makes sense. Particularly when we get into the knockout rounds and start seeing extra time for matches that end in ties. This would be a big step forward for player welfare during a time where many are significantly overplayed by club and country.
@MiguelDelaney@ChachaMarquis@WonAndDones 100% on point. Huge success so far.
Miguel is the one in the echo chamber trying to gaslight anyone who still pays attention to him
Echo chamber? lol.
Like The Athletic? The strongest critic of ticket prices by far? Even they put out an article yesterday that showed aside from two games (one in Mexico and one with a poor matchup in baking hot noon CA sun) the stadiums have been at capacity or very close. The games have absolutely been well attended and certainly on par with group stage games at previous WC’s.
You need to take the L on that narrative
Bottom line - you deleted the tweet because it was moronic and embarrassing. Most likely your editor had you take it down to try and save face and limit damage.
As for what else I’m complaining about - that would be your constant banging on and on for months about any and every negative angle you can possibly drum up about this tournament.
Example: your pre-tournament hot take that the high ticket prices would lead to the games not being well attended and severely diminished atmospheres. That has aged very poorly to say the least.
@MiguelDelaney@ChachaMarquis@WonAndDones Why am I so bothered that you put out a tweet criticizing a host city location that was so ridiculous that you later tucked your tail and deleted it because of how asinine it was?
Is this really a question?
Except that is not all you are doing. I find it interesting that you decided to delete your original tweet that sparked this conversation - the one where you questioned/complained about organizers choosing to hold games in a place called Tornado Alley.
And then you claim I am being too sensitive for calling you out on it and making light of how ridiculous your tweet was.
Why did you delete that tweet?
@MiguelDelaney@ChachaMarquis@WonAndDones You have been harping non-stop for months on any and every possible negative angle you can come up with concerning this tournament. Then you get here and complain about a possible natural disaster near a tournament stadium. But I’m the one being overly sensitive?
The irony…
Absolutely we are. And that’s the issue. He has had a clear and obvious agenda for this WC. He decided long ago that it was going to be a disaster and all his pre-tournament coverage emphasized that. He keeps beating the same drum now that it’s started and when many of his narratives prove incorrect over the next month (one being that the Americanization of ticket pricing/distribution/sales/re-sales would lead to mostly empty stadiums and very poor atmospheres because “more deserving” core fans would be priced out by affluent Americans) prove to be wide of the mark I highly doubt he will come back with articles admitting as much. The vast majority of games so far have had great turnout and amazing atmospheres. But I’m sure he will come along and tell us that’s not the case and we cannot believe what we are seeing and hearing with our own eyes and ears.
@MiguelDelaney@ChachaMarquis@WonAndDones Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season is an absolute classic. You should check it out. Follow it up with A Pirate Looks at Forty and then Come Monday.
If you can grab a couple Corona’s and enjoy them while listening on the beach at sunset you will never want to leave America
Don’t have to hunt for anything. You make it painfully easy
Anyways, Don’t sleep on Atlantic Hurricane season. It’s a goldmine for clicks & engagement. While you are here you should familiarize yourself with the NOAA Hurricane Center & Jim Cantore. And brush up on the terms “spaghetti models” & “cone of uncertainty”
You’ll thank me later
@MiguelDelaney@ChachaMarquis@WonAndDones I enjoyed your reporting/whining about Tornado warnings. Top stuff. When are you going to tell us all about Hurricane season and the risk/dangers of having games in Miami and Houston? And don’t forget about possible CA wildfires and what that could mean for air quality in LA.
@ChachaMarquis@MiguelDelaney@WonAndDones Don’t waste your time. Miguel has his socialist schtick & harps on his narratives. He’s just looking for clicks and engagement. He’s not going to report anything positive about USA or FIFA. He will continue to focus on the negatives and pander to his Europoor target demographic.
@LeGrove Knicks ending their Tottenham Hotspur like drought the year after Spurs finally won a trophy. Two perennial laughing stocks finally win trophies after generations without one.
