The potato, the tomato, the pepper, and the aubergine all share a family. A family that includes one of the deadliest plants in Europe.

They are nightshades, cousins of belladonna, deadly nightshade, a handful of whose berries can kill a child.

The ones on your plate are milder, but they never dropped the chemistry. They carry glycoalkaloids, solanine and chaconine, as a built-in pesticide.

Solanine is a cholinesterase inhibitor. The same broad mechanism that insecticides and nerve agents use to do their damage.

In the plant it is there to kill insects and fungi. You are quietly eating the pesticide the plant grew for itself.

A potato that has gone green or begun to sprout loads up with the stuff, and ordinary cooking does not break it down.

Green-potato poisoning is real and documented. Nausea, cramping, vomiting, headache, and in the worse cases drowsiness, delirium, and collapse.

The dose in a sound potato is low, which is why most people are fine. The margin is a good deal thinner than anyone lets on.

And a fair number of people with aching joints and angry guts find both quietly settle once the nightshades come off the plate.

We treat these as ancient, wholesome staples. They are recent arrivals that turned up armed with their own poison.

Wagter was never notified. Never given a voluntary assessment option. Never even told he’d been certified until police surrounded his vehicle three weeks later.

The officer’s own words on bodycam, captured by Wagter: “Dr. Taylor saw you in a cafe. She didn’t certify you then. And then she spoke with your family, got some more information, and... you’re going to have to turn that camera off.”

When Wagter — calm, compliant, repeatedly offering to come in voluntarily for an appointment — refused to stop filming, Dr. Emery (senior resident, CAR 87) certified him a second time on the spot.
