nikola tesla held 300 patents and designed the alternating-current system that lit half the planet. he tore up a contract worth $12 million to save the company that bought his work. he spent his last decade alone in room 3327 of the hotel new yorker. the hotel paid for his funeral.
what the obituary leaves out is what the room actually held.
he had counted his steps every day of his life. he could not eat unless the cubic volume of the food had been calculated first. dishes had to be presented in multiples of three. when he checked into the hotel new yorker in 1933, the room he chose was 3327. divisible by three.
the windows were always open. he was feeding pigeons. dozens at first, then hundreds. he wrote later that one of them, a white pigeon with grey wingtips, came to his window every night. "i loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and she loved me." when she went still in his hands he said the light from her eyes was brighter than anything he had ever built.
he had given the world the contract that made westinghouse. when westinghouse was nearly bankrupt in 1893, tesla tore up the royalty agreement that owed him $2.50 per horsepower of every ac generator sold. estimates put what he forgave at $12 million in 1893 dollars. he said he wanted the system to spread more than he wanted the money.
he was 86 when his heart stopped, on january 7 1943, in that hotel room. federal agents arrived within a day and removed every trunk and notebook he had. some of those papers are still missing.
six months later the supreme court ruled that the patents marconi had used to win the 1909 nobel prize for radio belonged to tesla. they gave him the credit. they could not give him the prize.
every wall socket in the developed world runs on a system he refused to be paid for.
