What is Good Friday?

Good Friday is the day our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross for our sins.

He willingly gave His life, bearing our punishment and carrying the weight of the world's sin.

It is called "Good" not because of the suffering, but because through His sacrifice, salvation was given to us and the price for sin was paid in full.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…"
— John 3:16

Good Friday is the greatest demonstration of love our Savior willingly suffering, bleeding, and dying for humanity. It is a day of sorrow, yet also a day of hope, because through the cross, Jesus made a way for us to be reconciled to God.

On this day, Jesus was betrayed by Judas with a kiss and arrested in the night.
"Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
— Luke 2:482

Peter, one of His closest disciples, denied Him three times, just as Jesus had foretold.
"I do not know Him."
— Matthew 26:74

Jesus was taken before Pontius Pilate. Though no fault was found in Him, the crowd shouted:
"Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"
— Luke 23:21

The soldiers mocked Him, beat Him, and placed a crown of thorns on His head.
"They twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head."
— John 19:2

Jesus then carried His cross to Golgotha, the place of the skull.
"And He went out, bearing His own cross."
— John 19:17

There, Jesus was crucified between two criminals.
"When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified Him."
— Luke 23:33

While on the cross, Jesus spoke His final words.

"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Even in suffering, He chose forgiveness.

"Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise."
— Luke 23:43
He offered salvation to the repentant thief.

"Woman, behold your son… behold your mother."
— John 19:26–27
He showed love and care even in pain.

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
— Matthew 27:46
Jesus bore the weight of our sins.

"I thirst."
— John 19:28
He experienced human suffering fully.

"It is finished."
— John 19:30
The work of salvation was complete.

"Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit."
— Luke 23:46
Jesus surrendered Himself to the Father.

At that moment, darkness covered the land.
— Luke 23:44

The temple curtain was torn in two.
— Matthew 27:51

The earth shook, and the centurion declared:
"Surely this was the Son of God."
— Matthew 27:54

Good Friday reminds us that Jesus took our punishment, bore our sins, and died in our place.

"But He was pierced for our transgressions… by His wounds we are healed."
— Isaiah 53:5

He was betrayed — yet He loved.
He was beaten — yet He forgave.
He was crucified — yet He saved.

Because of Good Friday, we have forgiveness.

Because of Good Friday, we have grace.

Because of Good Friday, we have hope.

The cross was not defeat it was victory. Jesus gave His life for us.

"It is finished."
