Spot on. Sadly most funders, and consequently even some directors/managers (since they have to chase the funding), are much more interested in flashy/showy projects over what's essential & meaningful. This goes for cataloguing and other core aspects of running museums.

15 years ago today, russia invaded Georgia.

While much of the world was ignoring the consequences, the Baltic countries were carefully studying how to prepare for Russia’s new cycle of aggression against Europe.

They concluded they should buy lots of Javelins to stop russian tanks. The Baltics accelerated and increased their purchases when russia invaded Ukraine in 2014.

Worth remembering that, throughout this time, this kind of response from the Baltics was being ridiculed by “russia experts” and various commentators who insisted russia wouldn’t revert to being a full scale aggressor ..,and even if it did then things like javelins aren’t gonna do much to stop it.

Those javelins would eventually be used to help defend Kyiv, helping prevent its fall and an even larger russian war against Europe right now.

That’s why it’s always worth listening to the Baltics. Ignoring russian aggression leads to more russian aggression. The cost always goes up next time. It won’t stop until it’s stopped. Now give Ukraine everything it needs.
