When do commercial practices like @darkpatterns exploit consumer behavioural biases in online environments? Answer in my new paper in @JConsPol, where I develop a theory of exploitation for consumer law. https://t.co/59BtMdCkEm

@FTC and @biztradegovuk are consulting on regulating drip pricing. Focus is on efficient consumer markets. I explain when and why drip pricing violates consumer autonomy. Harm to consumer autonomy may justify legal intervention, too.

Show how these categories apply to specific dark patterns: drip pricing, subscription traps, nagging, default settings that maximize the collection of data, website designs that effectively hide fees, sneak into basket, etc. 8/8

If you ask me, this is not a “clear and comprehensible” (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013) presentation of the total price. Reminds me of drip pricing (https://t.co/o6t4NfycCs). 4/4
On the last page, the total monthly cost becomes £24.99 per month. Still not clear as the small print shows. It is only £24.99 per month for the first year and will rise with inflation in the second year. 3/4
