I'm not saying it was snuck out but certainly with very little fanfare, there's two key changes coming on 1 January 2027:
* the 1 year salary cap on unfair dismissal awards will go;
* Minimum service for UDL claims becomes 6 months
The Secretary of State can no longer set minimum service levels (during strikes) in health, transport, education, fire & rescue, border control or nuclear decommissioning.
The Employment Rights Act 2025 came into force yesterday, 18 December 2025.
Most provisions either come into effect fully over the coming 2 years or need further legislation to implement them.
Of immediate effect (18 December) is the repeal of minimum strike service levels.
ACAS Early Conciliation periods (a mandatory step before most Employment Tribunal claims) are to be extended from 6 to 12 weeks from 1 December 2025.
Expect longer time frames before employers receive most claims.
