Stories of the so-called Rock Apes emerged during the Vietnam War, when American, South Vietnamese, and Viet Cong soldiers reported encounters with large, ape-like creatures in remote jungle regions.

Although widely discussed by veterans, no scientific evidence has confirmed that such creatures exist.

Rock Apes are generally described as muscular, human-like primates standing between three and seven feet tall with long hair, large fangs, and unusual feet.

According to many accounts, they were unusually aggressive and were said to throw rocks and other objects at soldiers.

Many of the most famous sightings came from areas such as Monkey Mountain near the Sơn Trà Peninsula and Hill 868.

Several military units reported seeing groups of ape-like figures during combat, though the descriptions varied from one witness to another.

After the war, Vietnamese researchers investigated the reports and found footprints that some believed were unusual, but no living animals or physical remains were ever discovered.

Despite repeated searches, the evidence has never extended beyond eyewitness accounts and tracks.

Scientists have suggested that the sightings may have been caused by misidentified wildlife, poor visibility, stress, or the harsh conditions of jungle warfare.
