Israel's Haifa refineries face years of repairs after Iranian strikes, report reveals

Israel's largest oil refineries sustained far heavier damage from Iranian missile strikes during the US-Israeli war on Iran than authorities had previously acknowledged, Israel's Channel 12 reported.

Reconstruction works at the refineries in Haifa Bay are expected to be completed in 2028.

The refineries, operated by Bazan, sustained severe damage in two separate Iranian strikes this year, despite Israel's Minister of Energy Eli Cohen and Bazan previously claiming no material damage had occurred.

Citing an interior ministry report, Yeshiva World said the damage extended to gas turbines, steam boilers, electrical rooms and other auxiliary systems not previously disclosed. One storage tank struck in March is beyond repair, Channel 12 reported.

The refineries were also damaged last year during Israel's twelve-day war on Iran, when Iranian missiles pierced the US-backed Iron Dome system and killed three Bazan employees, according to Channel 12. Bazan estimated those losses at $150-200 million.

Israel has withheld the full extent of war damage through strict military censorship, according to +972 Magazine, which recorded around 8,000 censored articles in 2024, the highest since it began tracking in 2011.
