Never charge below what you believe is your worth for any job, and here's why.

When I first embarked on my design career, I grappled with the fear of charging what I believed was my worth. This struggle still surfaces at times, and I've often found myself undercharging out of fear of losing a client. But let me assure you, this approach is fundamentally flawed.

One major limitation I faced for charging below was many times when a client pays below my worth, I get tired and burnt out, not because I don't like to design, but because I always like to give my best, but sometimes when you feel the pay is too small, the whole idea of putting your best can be frustrating, hence why the common slang that low budget client gives the most stress, I feel it's not necessarily the stress we are complaining about, but the fact that the amount paid doesn't commensurate with the work being put it.

Now let me give this warning: As a designer if you are paid for any service, give it your best. It is better not to take any gig than take it and do shabby work.

So, in essence, never be afraid to charge your worth. There's a client out there willing to pay you much more than you can think. Don't miss out on that client because you're working for clients below your pay

This alarming statistic represents 14.3 million Nigerians.

My client and I were sued for ₦50 million because of an image.

Here's the full story:

Back in 2022, I worked on a project with a client.

(Let's call the client Raph.)

Raph was about to launch his company and needed a billboard.

I got the brief for the project and got to work.

For the project, I needed the image of a black woman.

I searched online for the right image…and ended up using one from Shutterstock.

But that decision created an unexpected problem for me and my client.

We launched the campaign and were sued a few months later.

What happened?

During our investigation, we found out that someone had called the woman on our billboard to congratulate her.

But the “billboard lady” had no idea her image was being used.

So, she got a lawyer involved.

In my defense…

I explained the source of the image…

But that wasn't enough.

So we contacted Shutterstock to get a license as proof.

That's when we discovered the woman had never permitted her image to be uploaded.

A photographer had taken her picture…uploaded it to Shutterstock without her consent…and was making money from it.

Thankfully, Shutterstock provided us with a license…and that's how we won the case.

This situation could have ended badly.

A ₦50 million lawsuit over an image?

That's the kind of mistake that can sink a business.

Neither my client nor I did anything intentionally wrong.

We assumed that using an image from a stock platform meant we were legally covered.

When things go wrong, it's not what you intended that matters; it's what you can prove.

Many businesses make similar costly assumptions:

• Using stock images without verifying licensing rights.
• Signing contracts without fully understanding the legal terms.
• Running marketing campaigns without checking for compliance risks.
• Relying on verbal agreements instead of written contracts.

Always verify your sources. Always get everything in writing.

A small oversight can turn into a massive financial loss if you're not careful.

Thankfully, we had the right documentation to back us up.

But what if we didn't?

Don't let assumptions put your brand at risk.
