The traditional wedding was barely a week away. The Aso ebi was stunning, the vendors were fully paid, and everyone in their circle was celebrating the union of Kemi, a highly successful tech founder in Lagos, and Femi, a corporate executive who had always presented himself as a modern, progressive partner.
Everything was perfect until a casual Sunday evening conversation.
While going over the final guest list, Femi looked up from his laptop and casually mentioned that after the traditional rites on Saturday, Kemi would need to hand over all the property deeds to her business and real estate to his Uncle Tunde.
Kemi thought it was a joke. She laughed it off. Femi didn't laugh.
His tone grew aggressive. He explained that as a "submissive wife," it was only right that the wealth she built be placed under the "protection and guidance" of his family’s name to show respect. When she flatly refused, he began shouting about how she was too ambitious and that his family was doing her a favor by "taking her in."
Kemi cancelled the wedding the next morning.
