Thankful to my amazing District 34 SLP colleagues for treating me with a surprise bridal shower during our monthly speech-language meeting today! 💗 Thank you, speechies!
For newborns, it’s “out of sight, out of mind.”
Today is the 127th anniversary of the birth of groundbreaking Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget - making it a perfect day to spotlight one of his best known contributions to the field of child development: Object Permanence.
As its name implies, object permanence is an understanding that things continue to exist, even when we cannot see them.
While that may seem pretty straightforward to us as adults, Piaget noted that babies actually lack this awareness until roughly 8 months of age.
This terrific video illustrates the concept.
Watch what happens when this little guy’s toy giraffe is placed under a cloth. It’s as if it ceases to exist.
Baby isn’t upset. He doesn’t go searching for it. It’s just GONE.
At 7 months of age, object permanence is just around the corner for this little guy. It’s a big step forward intellectually… and makes peekaboo a lot more fun!
Do you have stories about your own child’s experiences with object permanence? I’d love to hear them.
