Melbourne has cancelled the Australia Day parade for good. Meanwhile Melbourne continues with:

The Midsumma Pride March goes on (only 5.7% of Victorians identify as "LGBTQIA+") despite violent scenes last year as around 50 protestors threw paint bombs & abused police as they attempted to march in the parade.

And the Chinese New Year Parade despite China's well documented human rights abuse. Notably against the Uyghur population, which the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said “may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity.”

Just recently Hospitality company Australian Venue Co announced it would ban Australia Day festivities in their 200+ venues. They backflipped this decision after receiving sizeable backlash saying:

“We sincerely regret that – our purpose is to reinforce community in our venues, not divide it. It is not for us to tell anyone whether or how to celebrate Australia Day.”
