My dad asked me recently why I’m still renting at 43.

I told him homes in our area are around $410,000.

He said, “Then save for a down payment.”

I told him 20% would be about $82,000.

He said, “Okay, so break it up into smaller amounts.”

I explained that after rent, childcare, insurance, and everything else, I can realistically save around $400 a month.

He grabbed a calculator and started doing the math.

$400 a month.

$82,000 needed.

He kept calculating.

Then he went quiet.

“That's going to take you about 17 years.”

Yep.

Then he told me what their first house cost.

He put down around $3,200 and had saved it in eight months while working at a factory.

He sat there for a minute and finally said:

“I always thought you kids were exaggerating.”

That hit me.

He wasn't trying to dismiss me.

He genuinely didn't understand how different the numbers are now.

Sometimes people aren't defending the system because they think it's fair.

They just haven't stopped to look at what it actually costs.
