Lo patearon, golpearon y escupieron por horas, hasta que no quedó una sola parte de su cuerpo sin estar cubierta de sangre. Lo querían con vida. Le clavaron una corona de espinas en la cabeza con tanta fuerza que se incrustó en su piel. Lo querían con vida. Después de horas de ser golpeado, burlado, azotado, flagelado y torturado, lo hicieron caminar con una cruz. Lo obligaron a cargarla. Un madero áspero, con astillas clavándose en heridas abiertas. Lo querían con vida. Querían que sintiera cada gota de dolor que podían causarle. Él tenía que sentirlo para poder sanarnos. La crucifixión fue históricamente una de las muertes más crueles y tortuosas que un ser humano podía enfrentar. Horas y horas de sufrimiento. Un sufrimiento que muchos de nosotros ni siquiera podemos imaginar, porque esa crueldad no es normal, no es algo que nuestra mente pueda comprender.
