@meIodee It’s a lot easier to change the minimum wage than it is to lower the price of everything by law. It’s done in some instances to prevent price gouging but isn’t really possible to fix the price of everything that can be bought.

@meIodee The government only dictates the minimum that can be paid. Because of what you’re pointing out, it also encourages (but doesn’t mandate) employers already paying $15 to pay more to retain their staff, but the choice to pay more is up to each individual business.

@meIodee Being free is more than being able to do whatever you want. I am less free if my boss is able to exploit my labor, so we have a minimum wage. I am less free if I’m not able to go outside without catching the pandemic, so we have mask mandates.

To make social progress through the government, you need to pass policy. That can’t happen without building coalitions, and coalitions can’t be built without making some people who disagree with you change their minds.

Defund the police is an awful slogan for persuasion purposes. The goal isn’t to defund the services that police provide, the goal is to reallocate funds so that the services are performed better. A lot more people can swallow that idea, while “defund the police” is a nonstarter.

Listen to those who’s experiences you will never have and believe what they have to say. Then, use your privilege to help them. Elevate POC voices and encourage your white friends to hear what they have to say. Tell others about what they might ignore. Vote with POC in mind.
