Despite decades of weak productivity growth, Italy still recorded a trade surplus of around €50.7B in 2025, with exports growing 3.3% and imports 3.1%.

In the first 11 months of 2025, Italy exported €591.3B in goods. Pharmaceuticals, transport equipment, machinery, food, metal products and high-value manufacturing remain core strengths.

This is the paradox of Italy:

Low productivity growth.
Weak innovation diffusion.
Fragmented firms.
Demographic decline.
Low labour-force participation.

But still one of Europe’s strongest industrial exporters.

The country still has world-class manufacturing ecosystems in machinery, luxury goods, pharmaceuticals, food, robotics, automotive components, aerospace and specialised industrial equipment.

The problem is that it produces it with an economic system that is too fragmented, too slow and too undercapitalised for the 21st century.

Italy’s industrial base is not dead. Its productivity engine is.

There was a demographic problem 2,200 years ago, and Polybius wrote exactly what caused it. Read carefully:

For when there are only one or two children, and one is lost to war and the other to illness, it is obvious that the cities will inevitably become deserted, just as a beehive weakens little by little, so too do cities that lack population become unable to survive."

People prefer partying, doing drugs, and living for today rather than having a purpose, building a family, and leaving a positive footprint in this world. They choose the easy life. At this point, it’s a form of natural selection between those who are worthy and those who are not to continue.
