Human beings are fundamentally driven by incentives and disincentives, and the possibility of being killed is obviously a disincentive. It’s impossible to precisely measure, though, because you would need to know the number of people who didn’t commit a heinous crime but otherwise might have. There’s no possible way to quantify the number of people who don’t do something but hypothetically might have. More importantly: the death penalty is rarely carried out, and takes decades to be administered even when it is carried out, so the deterrence effect is highly (and deliberately) diminished. We could solve that problem by doing it more, not less.

-it’s “expensive” only because, again, we take decades to carry it out and give criminals countless appeals even when their guilt isn’t remotely in question. So this is again an argument for executing people more often and more efficiently. Executing condemned criminals by hanging within 30 days of conviction would clearly be astronomically more cost effective than keeping them in prison for life. If that’s your point, sure I agree.
