Photos: When international Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan landed at Adan Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu on Wednesday morning, he was greeted with a warm and heroic reception.
Grace. Class. Talent. SOMALI.
No amount of hate or xenophobia will make a Somali bend the knee.
Thank you Omar Artan for lifting your nation and making us proud.

Omar Artan didn’t just make the #FIFAWorldCup, he made history as the first Somali referee to get there, and as #Africa’s best. That milestone stands no matter what. So sorry to see this, Omar. You reached the summit of your profession and inspired a generation back home just by getting there, and being kept off the pitch you earned doesn’t change that. This won’t be the end of your story on the world stage. The world stands with you as one family, wishing you resilience now and many more major finals to come. Solidarity. #Somalia
Somalia has many challenges, but you cannot give up. As a referee, you must keep fighting for your targets” says World Cup referee Omar Artan—in an interview with Al Jazeera.
Artan was denied entry to the U.S. and sent back after landing at Miami Airport, despite holding a diplomatic passport, an incident that has shaken the world. #Somalia

🚨 CAF, WHERE IS YOUR VOICE?
Africa’s best referee — Omar Abdulkadir Artan, CAF Referee of the Year 2025 and the first Somali ever selected for the FIFA World Cup — was denied entry into the US despite a diplomatic passport and approved visa. Turned back at the airport like a criminal. No reason given.
This is a direct humiliation of African excellence on the global stage.
CAF — you crowned him the best on the continent. Now you stay silent while one of your own is disrespected by the host nation?
No strong statement. No demand for answers from FIFA or US authorities. No defense of African officials.
This is not leadership. This is complicity in the face of Western arrogance.
Africa’s talent deserves better than puppet organizations that bow when it matters most.
Stand up for Omar Artan. Stand up for African football. Or step aside for those who will.
Historic Milestone for Somalia’s Statistical Development
SNBS celebrates landmark achievement in the advancement of 🇸🇴’s official statistics & economic measurement systems.
Macroeconomic Statistics Team concluded inaugural training workshop on the development & compilation of Somalia’s first-ever Producer Price Index (PPI)—a key milestone in our statistical history. Developed using data from Somalia Integrated Business Establishment Survey (SIBES), PPI represents an important enhancement of Somalia’s economic data infrastructure & analytical capacity.
For the first time, Somalia will have a nationally compiled Producer Price Index capable of measuring price changes at the producer level before goods reach consumers. This key economic indicator provides policymakers, researchers, development partners & investors with deeper insights into inflationary trends, production costs & overall economic performance, thereby strengthening evidence-based decision-making & economic policy formulation.
The training workshop was unveiled by SNBS Director General, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed & was conducted in partnership with the International Monetary Fund, whose technical support plays a vital role in promoting 🇸🇴’s statistical capacity.
Beyond its immediate value, PPI will serve as a foundational pillar for SNBS’s forthcoming compilation & publication of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) using the production approach—another historic first for 🇸🇴. This achievement is a major step towards aligning Somalia’s national accounts with international statistical standards, thus reinforces our commitment to data-driven governance & sustainable development.

On #WorldEnvironmentDay, we renew our commitment to protecting Somalia’s environment and building a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.
We held our first meeting with the U.S. Embassy Youth Council on April 12. It was encouraging to hear directly from young Somalis about their perspectives and priorities. I was impressed by their commitment to their communities and seeing Somalia a better nation for all.
The Investment department @MoPIED_Somalia has convened a two-day Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) Development Workshop, with representatives from FGS Institutions, FMS, the Somali Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Private Sector, Academia, and foreign investors in 🇸🇴.
Ms. Aisha Mohamud, Project Manager of @RajoKaaba, welcomed the recipients of the Master’s scholarship and encouraged them to embrace this opportunity with commitment, and a strong sense of purpose as they advance their education and prepare to contribute to the country’s future.
The Iran–U.S. Ceasefire terms are clear and explicit: the U.S. must choose—ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both.
The world sees the massacres in Lebanon. The ball is in the U.S. court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments.
Honored and grateful to the PM, H.E. @HamzaAbdiBarre, for appointing me as Director General of the Ministry of Health @MoH_Somalia. It was a privilege to serve at @SomaliaMolsa for two years & nine months. Thank you to all colleagues & partners for your support & collaboration.⤵️
