I am just reading with great sadness about the attack that killed 8 Pakistani security personnel and injured many more. My condolences to the families of those killed. The Pakistani Taliban have taken responsibility for the attack. In the all-too-familiar pattern, Islamabad is likely to blame #Afghanistan, further increasing tensions between the 2 countries and increasing the likelihood of actual war. It is heart-breaking to watch old patterns that led to nothing but grief in the past, continuously replay again and again. It will not lead anywhere good. And the tragic irony is that an “alternative future” is absolutely within reach and would be so much better for both countries and all of their people: an economic partnership between Afghanistan and Pakistan that would bring prosperity to both. I have pleaded repeatedly for a negotiated solution: a new agreement between #Afghanistan and #Pakistan with commitments by both countries to not allow their territory to be used by individuals or groups to threaten the security of the other, with monitoring by a trusted 3rd party. I put it forward again. Pakistan and Afghanistan are on a tragic trajectory. They need to make a bold shift.
