Grave provocation by any standards, but surprisingly, there has been a muted response from Sikh bodies, politicians, and influencers, both here and abroad.

Compare this with the havoc created in 2024 when a Hindu girl performed yoga at the same premises. The SGPC wrote to the Police Commissioner, an FIR was filed, employees were suspended and fined, and statements were issued to the media. There was widespread outrage, accompanied by dog-whistling that targeted the girl, who even received threats.

These guys have tanked 25 years of painstaking and bipartisan work to build productive U.S.-India relations. "The road to peace in Ukraine" most certainly does not "run through New Delhi" and it is quite the deflection to say so. The President of the United States was smiling with Putin in Alaska a few weeks ago, which makes many Indians even more incredulous. And calling India "a strategic freeloader" on weapons purchases is gratuitous nonsense and deeply ahistorical. But history, context, and politics haven't been of much interest to whoever is making policy toward India these days. This guy is a loose cannon - but the Treasury Secretary has said much the same thing, this stuff is either uncoordinated and unauthorized, which is concerning enough, or else coordinated and authorized. which would make it policy. At this point, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the relationship, such as it is, is largely on hold at best but potentially unraveling if someone doesn't put a floor under this fast. And we'll probably have to await a change of administration to get things back onto a much more productive track.
