What on earth has happened to the calibre and integrity of our politicians? Through the 80s & 90s, British politics had numerous politicians (from all sides) who were genuine public servants, intellectual heavyweights and conviction based. But right now, politics is dominated by empty vessel lightweight politicians who appear to be more concerned with indulging in freebies, expenses and corporate lobbying & funding. Politics has become a shallow game show rather than a deep battle of ideas. And this helps to explain why the country is in a mess. No one is stepping up and making the hard decisions combined with the intellectual rigour and vision that is required to improve so many failing aspects within our society. The sense of drift and decline is tangible.
