It won't lower unemployment, slow down crime, or improve the economy, but it will plant a seed in enough people's heads and hearts that the future hasn't been written yet. We could still rescue this "game" called life we're playing as South Africans, and it serves as a proxy that the impossible is still possible. Three weeks in a row, our beloved Boks had to dig deep against the best teams in the world. Every week it looked like we were down and out and then somehow, we pulled through when it mattered most. They have created a blueprint for we can still achieve as a nation even though "it doesn't look likely". This World Cup victory is about more than rugby because ideas are powerful. South Africans are bombarded with negativity and doom on the daily, so it's easy to feel like it's all going to hell. But last night's victory serves as a reminder that the future is still in our hands. It's so easy to look at the current state of South Africa and condemn us to certain destruction, but the Boks gave us the ability to point to an unlikely victory. It's easier to believe things can get better when there's a real life example set before us. Last point. The Boks showed us one more thing. If we want the "victory" bad enough then we've got to take action. No one is going to do it for us. As citizens, we've got to do it ourselves. It will be hard, but it is possible.
