“A good book is an entertaining read. A great book holds up a mirror that allows us to more clearly see ourselves and the world we live in. Francis Su’s Mathematics for Human Flourishing is both a good book and a great book.”

My Flourishing book is on sale at Amazon today, lowest I've ever seen it, so I bought some too, to give away. https://t.co/nvjwhjzrJi

"This book is not about how great #mathematics is, though it is, indeed, a glorious endeavor. [...] this is a book that grounds mathematics in what it means to be a #human being and to live a more fully human life."

In Spain I was so inspired by work of my host Elena Gil @ET21MaThinking. I visited a math workshop she pioneered for kids with Down’s Syndrome. They explore, make discoveries. And they love it!

Do you believe that *everyone* can flourish in math? She lives it out! 👇 1/🧵

Off to Spain! The Spanish translator & publisher invited me to give a couple of talks: Sep 4 (details in photo) and Sep 10 at the Universidad de Zaragoza (“What makes a mathematical idea beautiful?” https://t.co/dIx2huADns)

An unexpected joy: at #ICME15, I met translators of the Spanish and Chinese language editions of my Flourishing book, who are here! Grateful—translation is hard work:

“Matemáticas para el florecimiento humano” (Elena Gil)
《数学的力量：让我们成为更好的人》(Xuan Zheng/Jier Shen)

Just finished the excellent @mathyawp book Mathematics for Flourishing. It’s not only about math but also includes profound insights about human values and human perseverance. https://t.co/69dNamF49V

@nomad_penguin @mathyawp My Masters advisor created one of our core courses based on @mathyawp Dr. Su's book right after its release. This course and the book changed me as a teacher, teacher leader, and person.

Thanks to @misterwootube and @nomad_penguin for getting us thinking about inclusive teaching at @SydMathInst (in the seminar @Tillus_ and I are running on the humanity, culture, and communication of maths).

Here are a few things I took away (thread)…

“Mathematics for Human Flourishing” by @mathyawp.
How maths and doing it helps to fulfil our deep needs as humans, and develop the character strengths that help us flourish, and also how we can welcome everyone into the experiences that let them share in all of that.

A re-read, because Francis is giving a public lecture at UniSA next month! This really is a beautiful, nourishing book. #read2024

A wonderful visit to @HopeCollege. I had a meaningful, moving visit with students in the Hope-Western prison education program, who had read @Math4HF. And I met Alvin, who painted this self-portrait that now hangs in the Hope library. Look closely at the purple book on his desk!

[Francis Su @mathyawp]

Now… @Math4HF is in Italian! “Matematica per il fiorire dell’essere umano”. With thanks to Ana Millán Gasca and Francesco Saverio Tortoriello for translating.

...around a large set of readings about math, math education. Discussions, writing/reflections, and projects.

Here's some artwork a student did in this course last summer: "Dichotomy of the Mathematical Tree" by Mark Ying '25, shared with permission.
