A recent study by the research network Afrobarometer found that nearly a quarter of Moroccans support beating their wives. The finding has prompted warnings from researchers about the continued influence of selective interpretations of religious and customary texts that justify violence against women.
The study, titled "Exposure to Violent Conflicts and Attitudes Towards Wife-Beating in Africa," revealed that 24 percent of Moroccans believe that beating a wife may be justified in some or all cases. In a comparison to the broader African average from the same study, 72 percent of Africans believe wife-beating is "never justified at all," while 19% think it's justified in some cases and 9% believe it is always justified.
Researchers expressed concern that ideological groups are exploiting digital platforms to promote "extremist male discourse." The study was based on data collected between 2016 and 2023 from over 99,000 people in 39 African countries. Gabon recorded the highest rate of support for wife-beating at 67%, while Cape Verde had the lowest at just 3%.
