Yesterday I had to explain my PhD in one minute. Wow what an exercise! Thankfully Sunday was a stormy day here in Nuuk and I could draw an explanatory slide for the presentation 🦌
So happy to see this paper out! Huge thanks to all the co-authors who made this possible (especially
@icbarrio ). Read the whole article here: https://t.co/0JYtxBQ8D5

Management strategies for chronic wasting disease impact the genetic viability of wild tundra reindeer in Europe. In particular, male biased harvest and population decimation increase genetic drift and put genetic variation at risk.

Where does Svalbard reindeer come from? That is the garentied question on get (after maybe, how many are they). It is a while since we gather data aiming to clarify this. In Katharina published MSc work, we also include ancient mtDNA from Franz Joseph Land and East Greenland!

Ancient reindeer mitogenomes to infer the ancestral origins of the reindeer on Svalbard, and the first genomes from the extinct East Greenland pop. A big team effort led by Katha Hold & @Nicolas_Dussex !

4000 years of genetic information showed that historical overharvesting drastically changed Svalbard reindeer genetic structure and decreased whole-genome diversity by 26%. Implications for diverse genetic pathways are unknown.

Now out in @molecology Molecular Ecology, a palaeo-genomic investigation of over-hunting in the endemic Svalbard reindeer population!
Congrats to Fabi (first chapter of his Ph.D. thesis) and all coauthors! @Mathilde_MLM @BiekerVanessa @BrageBH

9th year of tundra icing experiment is successfully set up! 💪🥳 🚿 Whyyy do we water the tundra you may wonder?! To simulate rain-on-snow events + investigate the impact of ground icing on tundra vegetation! In a rapidly warming Arctic, winter rain and icing = likely new normal!
Peu importe qui dis quoi, ça c est tout mélangé, mais au moins les mechanismes (complexes) expliqués ne le sont pas trop. Bonne lecture de Noël!

Trondheim has lost 50 snow days since the 1960s - from 77 to 27 average per year. A minor consequence of #ClimateChange compared to the destruction and suffering happening across the globe, but still consequential for Norwegian #skiing culture and all who love #wintersports. 2/3
Thanksful for weeks of intensive transfer of knowledge on Greenlandic caribou & muskox ecology. Yeap, it is just to start... somewhere. Looking forward to when all these (gigantic) bits of lands aren't just topographic maps in my head! Pic: M.Martin
🌟 Huge gratitude to @eseb_org's ADAPT special topic network for generously funding this incredible course! 🙌 Thanks to this support, attendees had the fantastic opportunity to learn from these 2 outstanding researchers @marie__louis and @AndrewFoote2. 🚀
How do you do population genomics in a species without genetic variation?
Find out in our new publication in @molecology titled "Population genomics of the muskox' resilience in the near absence of genetic variation" 🧵

Saria presenting here great Master work on mercury content in the collection of ancient and historical Svalbard reindeer antlers. Not as dramatic levels as expected. @CBD_NTNU@NTNU
Wonderful experience at the Svalbard Science Conference 2023 in Fornebu with so many cool researches across a wide range of discplines #SSC23. Great time reconnecting with my supervisors and presenting results from my master’s thesis! 🦌🧪📜❄️

@Lars_Holst Seems the title does not show up in the online version. In short: PhD scholarship on spatial patterns of plant-herbivore feedback in Greenland! Thanks for sharing!
