BMW E39 5 Series.
This is what happens when BMW wasn’t trying to make the 5 Series feel like a luxury gadget.
It was a driver’s car first.
The proportions were right. The cabin was simple. The steering had weight. The chassis felt planted without trying to isolate you from the road.
And then there were the engines, from the straight-sixes to the V8s and that glorious M5.
No giant screens. No artificial exhaust noise. No complicated drive modes trying to manufacture character.
Just a great BMW, built in an era when “ultimate driving machine” still felt like a description, not a slogan.
Only 67 people could have this car. One of BMW’s wildest ideas.
The E90 M3 CRT took everything people loved about the E9x M3 and turned the dial further.
A 4.4-litre naturally aspirated V8, 450 hp, carbon-fibre bodywork, weight reduction and a titanium exhaust.
Only 67 were built.
No turbo. No hybrid system. No oversized technology suite.
Just a screaming V8, a lighter body and BMW engineers given enough freedom to build something properly special.
This is the kind of M car they simply don’t make anymore.

The XM is probably one of the strangest BMWs ever made.😂
And I mean that as a compliment.
A V8 SUV with hybrid assistance, almost 650 hp in its original form, ridiculous size, ridiculous weight, and a design that still gets BMW fans arguing years later.
People complain that it isn’t what a BMW should be.
Maybe that’s exactly the point.
BMW has always had cars that divided opinion when they were new. Some became icons. Some didn’t.
The XM is still writing its story.
But I’ll say this:
I’d rather have BMW build something controversial than spend another decade building cars nobody remembers.

Delivered new in Tokyo, Japan 🇯🇵 in 1989, this example spent the majority of its life on Japan's east coast before being imported into South Africa in 2020 and registered on the local NATIS system.
-
Following a brief period of local ownership, the car entered one of South Africa's most significant BMW collections, where it underwent a meticulous, no-expense-spared restoration with the objective of creating one of the finest E30 M3 examples possible.
As values continue to strengthen globally and truly exceptional examples become increasingly difficult to find, opportunities to acquire an E30 M3 restored to this standard are becoming exceedingly rare.
