As Somalilanders, trusting Somalia has proven to be a great disappointment. When #Somaliland united with Somalia in 1960, the European Union and the Common Market did not yet exist. The idea of African unity — or the creation of the African Union (@AfricanUnion) — was not even under discussion.

We believed in integration — in building a peaceful, democratic, and united Somali Republic with a population of fewer than 5 million and a coastline stretching over 3,000 kilometers. It was a golden opportunity for everyone.

Unfortunately, the reality in Mogadishu shattered that vision. We encountered politicians without vision — leaders more interested in destroying than building, in deceiving rather than progressing. It became a nation where agreements were signed one day and forgotten the next.

After 30 years of suffering and broken promises, we had no choice but to run for our lives and separate ourselves from #Somalia. Trusting Somalia will ultimately disappoint you — deeply, that is for certain.
