I had a very painful conversation with my 9 year old daughter yesterday. Honestly, I would not wish this conversation on any father. 💔

We were on a video call when she suddenly asked, “Messi or Ronaldo?”

I was taken aback. My mind immediately wandered to how she even knew about these things. So I asked her where she had heard about the debate.

“Dad, just answer,” she said.

I replied, “No, let us hear from you first. Messi or Ronaldo?”

She said, “Well, initially it was Ronaldo.”

I almost threw my phone across the room.

“What do you mean initially? You changed your mind?”

“Dad, let me finish.”

“So, as I was saying,” she continued, “initially I supported Ronaldo, but he disappointed me at the World Cup, so now I support Messi.”

I could no longer stay calm.

“You do not change these things, kiddo!” I shouted.

“Dad, stop screaming at me,” she replied.

That was when I realised I had actually raised my voice. I apologised.

“Well,” she said, “now it is your turn.”

To be honest, I did not even want to answer anymore, but I took it upon myself to educate the child.

“Well, for me, Ronaldo. Always. You see, kid, Ronaldo is called the GOAT, which means the Greatest of All Time because…”

“But Dad,” she interrupted, “if he is the greatest, how come Messi is still at the World Cup and he is not?”

I was not about to get into a football debate with my own 9 year old daughter.

So, in what I believed was a very calm voice, I replied, “Do you know Ronaldo has scored more goals than anyone in football history? Do you know Messi retired from Argentina before you were even born because of failure?”

“Dad,” she said, “you are screaming again.”

I genuinely did not realise I was shouting.

I threw my phone onto the couch. It somehow still managed to get a small crack.

Well... I just hope the little traitor got the message!
