The UK and Italy stopped testing in the community too early and the delay between the reporting of the first ten deaths and national lockdown was 10 and 16 days respectively. Neither maintained test/trace. These delays allowed the epidemic to explode. (20)

BBC report a terrible crisis in Japan...where they have had 263 deaths and 11,135 cases. That's 2 deaths per million pop. Here in UK we have had 135,000 cases, 18,100 deaths and 267 per million. And that's with 40% of community deaths missing.

In the UK we have taken the triple hit of terrible death toll, high economic costs, and awful social consequences bc govt allowed virus to spread at the start, then had to reverse and take harsh lockdown. A true lose-lose for everyone. And economy = lives also.
