@AwesomeOttawa This is rewarding activity prohibited under the Ontario Heritage Act. They are not “saving history” but destroying it & archaeological sites. Activities such as this should not be encouraged, made public, nor awarded. The proper term is looting, & they are looters.
MEdia outlets like @CBCOttawa@OttawaMorning also recently shared the story (screenshot from their newscast - is that a copper point?!?!). Activities such as this should not be encouraged, made public, nor awarded. The proper term for this is looting, and they are looters.
We recently heard @AwesomeOttawa is rewarding the "Digging Dudes" who metal detect and dig up artifacts in Ontario. This is prohibited under the Ontario Heritage Act. @OntArchSoc@APA_Ontario@ExploreON
Section 48 of the OHA forbids conducting archeological field work without a permit or the removal of any artifact or physical evidence of past human activity.
[David Attenborough voice] "Here we've found the elusive Senior Archaeologist. Well adapted to the stresses of the office environment, habituated to emails and phone calls, it misses regular digging experience and is maladapted for life in the wild."
