@briebriejoy Loved this episode and Professor Ware's insights. But still get frustrated by the interpretation of early hip hop as uniformly revolutionary and/or afrocentric. People like DJ Hollywood were as foundational as Herc and Bam, and he played downtown discos for rich white club kids
@jbarro You see the problem there, right? Pro-pharmaceutical for some means maximizing profits no matter what and for others means helping sick people no matter what. The chasm and the stakes between the two is the battleground
@davidsirota I’m at the point where I wake up and go to https://t.co/eRhxZzByeq, and when I leave the house where my union made Lever hat. Keep grinding, we need you!
@scott_pianowski Just finished listening and feel compelled to toot my own horn about having just taught a 90s Popular Music and Culture seminar last spring. Singles, Reality Bites, and Clueless all made appearances (duh). Great show today!
@CTowersCBS Central Park Zoo is solid and surrounded by playgrounds, splashpads, and… well, Central Park. Aquarium in Coney Island is great and plenty to do on the boardwalk, Children’s Museum in midtown and Cloisters museum uptown for indoor stuff
@CTowersCBS I think that’s right. But the 90s seems retrospectively to have been the swan song of a certain mode of consumption (call it analog if you want) that started in the 1840s and accelerated through—then started slowing down after—the 90. So the nostalgia is… different? Unique? 🤷♂️
@CTowersCBS Yeah maybe you’re right—really any REM pre-Monster sounds indie-ish to me; but I also have the damndest time not collapsing indie and alternative into the same thing. That Spin Doctors album always felt super indie to me (even the hits) and same for Blind Melon (kickass record)
@Roto_Frank So I drafted Henry Davis and Campusano in a one catcher league, planning to cut Campusano when Davis gets eligibility. But now should I cut Davis?? It’s a daily H2H Cat league
@Roto_Frank Would you keep holding Jordan Walker in a daily lineup 12-team roto? Him sucking up a bench spot in a daily league really limits counting stats accumulation, streaming pitchers, playing matchups, etc. Cardinals are annoying right now…
@themodernfolk I’ve spent more time listening to Screw than any other music (wrote my dissertation on screwtapes), and IT NEVER GETS OLD. Truly the gift that will never stop giving.
