Donald Trump discusses getting rid of the estate {inheritance} tax on family farms in the USA because of the financial and mental health impact on farmers. Keir Starmer awkwardly looks on in silence.
The massive gap in farming profitability compared to real world wages is partly m, if not the biggest reason this new tax rule doesn’t work.
I have had a lot of people shouting on X about how farming is flawed, why don’t we sell up because we’re obviously inept business owners etc etc etc.
The short answer is that food is too cheap. Why?
Food is an essential that most aren’t willing to pay more for. Im privileged that a lot of people choose to use our farm meat business and that’s wonderful, but around the country this isn’t the case for a lot of farms.
We have had a generation who deem the car they drive, the clothes they wear, the flashy holidays etc more important than the food they buy.
But before you reply and get cross 😂…
This is not their fault.
This is a culture that’s been instituted in this country for a long time. It’s good for the economy if your people just want flashy stuff.
It means they spend more than they need, borrow more than they need, work more than they should, need holidays because of the intensity of life, need nurseries and childcare to barely earn enough to pay the nursery in the first place and so on. The only winner is the government and this is what they want.
We live in a world that’s so difficult, demanding and flawed that we need “the stuff” to be able to cope and thus food became worth less to us.
But who does this benefit? Have you ever realised how you’re not actually happy the week after you have just bought that new car, new watch or lastest television? I guarantee the novelty has gone. I also guarantee the excitement of your favourite food or favourite drink has never faded .
The fact is food is something we should prioritise and have a great deal to do with. We should know everything about it, every detail.
We should have a hand in producing it and always be cooking it from scratch.
This is why farming in the uk is sacred and needs your support
