Words of condemnation alone will not stop attacks on Kyiv. Only sustained military support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Moscow can do that.
This week, the EU has started disbursing €6 billion under the €90 billion support loan to strengthen Kyiv’s defences.
Today, I will propose to sanction more entities supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex in response to the strikes. The more Moscow attacks civilians, the more sanctions must be imposed.
We keep raising the cost until Russia understands it cannot win.
EU staff in Kyiv are accounted for. I am deeply grateful to our colleagues on the ground, who continue their work with courage and dedication under the most difficult circumstances.
Russia continues to answer diplomacy with missiles.
We are determined to make that choice painfully expensive.
Today, we present our 20th sanctions package.
Sanctions severely hurt Russia’s economy. And every sanction chips away at its capacity for war.
Moscow is not invincible. On the battlefield, its army is stalling. At home, its economy is cracking.
More pressure, together with our partners, and increased military support to Ukraine can shorten this war.
The opening of the Rafah crossing marks a concrete and positive step in the peace plan.
The EU’s civilian mission is on the ground to monitor crossing operations and support Palestinian border guards.
For Gaza’s sick and wounded, the reopening is a lifeline. It will allow families to reunite after far too long apart.
Practical steps like this help move the truce plan forward and must continue. At the same time, Gaza remains in urgent need of aid. Its reconstruction will depend on Hamas' demilitarization.
Putin doesn’t want peace, Russia’s reply to diplomacy is more missiles and destruction. This deadly pattern of recurring major Russian strikes will repeat itself until we help Ukraine break it.
Russia’s reported use of an Oreshnik missile is a clear escalation against Ukraine and meant as a warning to Europe and to the US.
EU countries must dig deeper into their air-defence stocks and deliver now. We must also further raise the cost of this war for Moscow, including through tougher sanctions.
The EU just decided to indefinitely immobilise Russian assets.
This ensures that up to €210 billion in Russian funds stay on EU soil, unless Russia fully pays reparations to Ukraine for the damage it has caused.
We keep increasing the pressure on Russia until it takes negotiations seriously.
Next week’s European Council will be crucial to secure Ukraine’s financial needs for the coming years.
As intense diplomacy to end Russia's war continues, our focus lasts on two priorities: increasing pressure on Moscow and strengthening support for Kyiv.
This means more sanctions, securing financial aid to Ukraine for 2026-27 and cracking down on oil-smuggling ships.
Robust security guarantees for Ukraine must be part of any peace deal, they will be the only safeguard capable of stopping Russia from re-invading.
This was the focus of today’s Coalition of the Willing call.
The agreement on the first phase of the Gaza peace deal marks a significant breakthrough.
This is a major diplomatic accomplishment and a real chance to end a devastating war and release all the hostages.
The EU will do what it can to support its implementation.
It cannot be that Russia “accidently” violates three times in two weeks European air space.
Russia is testing European borders and probing our resolve.
It will continue to provoke as long as we allow it.
My statement at the @UN Security Council ↓
Last night in Poland, we saw the most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began, and indications suggest it was intentional, not accidental.
I am in contact with @SecGenNATO and @radeksikorski.
The EU stands in full solidarity with Poland. (1/2)
Every Russian attack is a deliberate choice and a message: Russia does not want peace.
Today’s strikes, including on a government building in Kyiv, are part of a clear pattern of escalation.
We will continue to support Ukraine’s defence industry and tighten sanctions on Moscow.
Russian strikes on Ukraine's cities are depraved, meant to kill civilians.
Flags are flying at half-mast to mourn the victims.
More weapons for Ukraine and tougher sanctions on Russia are the fastest way to end the war.
Getting more air defenses to Ukraine fast is our priority.
The killing of civilians seeking aid in Gaza is indefensible.
I spoke again with @gideonsaar to recall our understanding on aid flow and made clear that IDF must stop killing people at distribution points.
All options remain on the table if Israel doesn’t deliver on its pledges
We are standing firm.
The EU just approved one of its strongest sanctions package against Russia to date.
We’re cutting the Kremlin’s war budget further, going after 105 more shadow fleet ships, their enablers, and limiting Russian banks’ access to funding. (1/3)
Each time the world reaches out, Putin answers with missiles.
Russia’s escalating attacks on Kyiv show that Moscow doesn’t want peace.
Air defence systems and missiles are scarce everywhere.
But Ukraine needs them now, every single day, to protect its people.
Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, as it would be a threat to international security.
I urge all sides to step back, return to the negotiating table and prevent further escalation.
EU Foreign Ministers will discuss the situation tomorrow.
Last night's attacks again show Russia bent on more suffering and the annihilation of Ukraine. Devastating to see children among innocent victims harmed and killed. My thoughts are with the families today.
We need the strongest international pressure on Russia to stop this war.
Ending the federal grant funding @RFERL is a tragic own goal for the US. Together with @VOANews & @RadioFreeAsia, RFERL has been a beacon of truth, democracy & hope for millions of people around the world. This can only benefit America’s enemies.

Three years ago in Bucha.
The sadly remembered mass grave near the St. Andrew's church not far away from my place.
67 bodies were unearthed from there following the Russian defeat and withdrawal from the Kyiv area just days earlier.
We were there.
I think back then, I did some research and found out that the body recovered in the video belonged to a local policeman who had been shot and killed.
I will never forget that day and that sight, with dead arms and legs sticking from underneath the ground, layer by layer, and stains of dark clotted blood on the oilcloth.
This is what really stands behind "Ukraine should just surrender."
This is the "peace" Russia prepares for us if we collapse.
Don't look away.
The US and Europe will not always see eye to eye. But Washington and its EU allies need to work together to counter the axis of Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China, says @kajakallas.
