"Lol" Pringle's guardianship of The Axe was put to the test on the night of April 17, 1899, when a large group of Stanfords burst into his fraternity house & ransacked it in an effort to recover The Axe. They failed, because Pringle had concealed The Axe inside the pocket doors.
On April 17, 1899, the first Axe celebration was held at @Cal. The Axe, liberated from the Stanfords following a @CalBaseball victory two days earlier, was paraded around campus in the hands of baseball and football star Charles "Lol" Pringle, who was named Guardian of the Axe.
