I don't think people who obsess over their worlds in fantasy are understanding it right.
The world matters in proportion to how much it matters for the story.
A story can be told im a single room that is more interesting than an almanac.
What makes "Mad Men" compelling is that Don Draper has all the qualities of greatness despite his self-destructive tendencies. We root for him because we can sense flickers of self-awareness and potential. The raw ingredients are there for a powerful and complete man.
But, he lacks integration. He has not fully integrated his past as Dick Whitman with the identity he has willed into being: Don Draper.
In the privacy of reading, we see this self-creation process, this act of creativity. Don Draper is Dick Whitman's creation, including the charm and the presentation of mastery, intellect and success. Dick/Don's powerful sensitivity and creativity is the essence of the character. He is at his best and most real when he is in the process of creation, free from the burden of the fractured Self.
But the image of Don Draper cannot acknowledge and incorporate the painful reality of Dick Whitman into a complete and unified narrative. This is the core drama.
This heedless, self-destructive pattern is not uncommon with handsome, charming people. What may keep them from maturing is the way they easily get what they want from others. Don's success with his clients, his employers and his many loves, inhibits him. The only corrective he finds is in the painful consequences of his reckless self-destructive behavior.

The allegation is that men identify with a character that the author was ultimately trying to condemn, or at least portray as tragic
Whilst I do think authorial intent is overrated, I think what is actually happening is that men are working through their shadow via these characters
People who larp as Homelander enthusiasts aren't taking Homelander with them through every interaction in their day to day lives
However, they are refamiliarising themselves with a repressed and disagreeable thing in their psyche
