I recently watched the James Gunn Superman movie and was taken aback by how anti-masculine it was. One would think superhero movies are an avenue to celebrate sagacity, gravitas, and power wielded well. This movie does the opposite. 1/2

Power is feared, Pa Kent abdicates his role as a father, and Lex Luthor is unremarkable and petulant. What does a good man look like? Stories have the potential to vision these ideals. But tragically this latest interpretation of Superman seems to do the opposite. 2/2

There is always some moral panic of the day, but without a reference point, we don’t truly know where we are coming from or where we are going to. Taking a global perspective, we can understand how different cultures have wildly different ethics than ours. 1/4

The tomb of Napoleon in France is not just his tomb. The building is an army museum, it is a chapel, and it was formerly a temple to Mars and maintains pagan imagery. There is wide variety of things to be venerating all in the same space. (1/3)
