FULL REVIEW:

The first major compliment I can give about Marvel’s Wonder Man… is that it just doesn’t feel like an MCU show. And I know we say that about literally any MCU project we consider to be good such as Guardians of The Galaxy, Thunderbolts*, Fantastic Four: First Steps, etc. But like… this doesn’t even feel like something you’d watch on Disney+, but rather HBO Max. The writing, the pacing, the commentary, the style!! This is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood meets Donald Glover’s Atlanta. A love letter to filmmaking, friendship, and dreams.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II delivers one of the most human performances ever brought to the mcu as the openly flawed yet passionate Simon Williams that feels nothing short of heartfelt and authentic. And he is paired with the great Ben Kingsley whose character Trevor Slattery is finally realized to his fullest potential after his controversial debut in Iron Man 3 thirteen years ago, with his overall arc now being within the top 5 of the mcu. Their bromance is felt as the bond between these two characters are so fun and potent that I’d be eager to follow them once more wherever or whenever we see them in the future.

That said… I don’t particularly think this show will be for everyone, atleast within the MCU fan crowd. Obviously if you’re expecting just a big hype fest that builds up to future movies or shows, none of that’s here. Not even a post credit scene. But this also isn’t really a superhero show. Or an action one, for that matter. While Simon is seemingly a mutant and obviously that does have major implications for the future, his powers are used to create a different more personal sort of conflict in this show.

Throughout this whole miniseries you only really get one fight scene- if you can even call it that really. It’s not all that reflective of the actual Wonder Man comics at all and more so a reinvention of sorts, and that may be a tough sell for certain people. The style of the series may also be reason as to why Marvel and Disney thought it would be better to just release it all at once as this likely made for a more enjoyable viewing experience than weekly slice of life.

Yet funnily enough it was also kinda annoying when the show reminded you that it IS an MCU show, as literally nothing with the DODC is remotely interesting to me😭.

THAT said… I think if you’re willing to meet this show where it’s at and listen to what it actually has to say? It’s hard to walk away not loving this.

Human, surreal, and unapologetically whimsical. Marvel’s Wonder Man is truly something special. And if this is any sign to what Destin Daniel Cretton is bringing to the mcu now? I think we’re in for an all-timer Spider-Man movie very soon…

Maybe unpopular opinion, but I hate this residence type touring because it basically shifts the costs of travel to the fans. It used to be the artists trying to get to many fans as possible, now WE have to spend extra money on flights and hotels if we want to see the show
