Former Lioness Eni Aluko inspires next generation on return to Leafield Athletic Ladies
Former England international, broadcaster, and sports director Eni Aluko made an emotional return this week to Leafield Athletic Ladies, the grassroots club where her football journey began.
More than 500 girls, women, and community members, including over 150 players, attended the special event, which followed the Lionesses’ Euro 2025 triumph and aimed to encourage greater participation in grassroots football.
Eni joined in with training sessions alongside players of all ages before taking time to speak about her path from Leafield to representing England over 100 times. She also posed for photos, signed shirts, and answered questions from young players.
Eni Aluko said: “Coming back to Leafield was incredibly special for me. Football gave me confidence, community, and a career I could never have imagined - and it all started here. My message is simple, it’s never too late to start your football journey. Whether you’re a girl picking up a ball for the first time or a woman coming back to the game after years away, football has something to offer you. Seeing so many faces here shows the game is in safe hands.”
Leafield Athletic Ladies’ Head Coach, Tash Tezgel, added: “We were thrilled to welcome Eni back home. She’s proof of what’s possible when grassroots football is nurtured and supported. The excitement her visit generated will stay with our players for a long time. It reminded everyone here - from young girls to parents on the side-lines - that football is open to all and that anything is possible. We can’t wait to see the positive impact on the women and girls that this will have.”
The event highlighted the importance of grassroots clubs in building inclusive and accessible pathways into the game, with Aluko and Leafield coaches encouraging women and girls to get involved not only as players, but also as coaches, referees, and volunteers.
