Kun Minja Koskela @minjakoskela makaa tyylikkäästi sohvalla mustavalkoisessa mekossa ja julistaa, että Purran budjetti on "lisää rahaa rikkaille, kovempaa keppiä köyhille", kyse ei ole vain budjettikritiikistä. Kyse on syvemmästä kulttuurisesta ja psykologisesta muutoksesta, joka on tapahtunut vasemmistossa.

Aiemmin vasemmistoliitto @vasemmisto (ja sen edeltäjät) oli aidosti duunaripuolue. Nykyään sen viestinnän kärkenä ovat lähes päivittäin "köyhät".

Keitä nämä köyhät oikeastaan ovat? Eivät ainakaan ay-liikkeen johtajia, joiden palkat ovat moninkertaisia keskivertosuomalaiseen verrattuna. Eivätkä he ole puolueen näkyvimpiä hahmoja, joiden elämäntapa, koulutus ja sosiaaliset verkostot kuuluvat aivan toiseen yhteiskuntaluokkaan.

Tässä suhteessa Gad Saadin @GadSaad analyysi on valaiseva. Saad kuvaa kirjassaan "The Parasitic Mind", miten tietyt ideat toimivat kuin aivoihin iskeytyvät loiset. Ne kaappaavat isäntänsä ajattelun, tekevät tämän immuuniksi vasta-argumenteille ja leviävät sosiaalisesti, koska ne tarjoavat moraalisia palkintoja.

Yksi voimakkaimmista tällaisista ajatusloisista on "uhriutumisen kultti" (victimhood as a virtue). Kun uhriasemasta tulee moraalista valuuttaa, politiikka ei enää keskity siihen, miten mahdollisimman moni nousisi pois köyhyydestä. Sen sijaan keskitytään siihen, kuka on riittävän suuri uhri ansaitakseen myötätuntoa ja resursseja. Samalla syntyy performatiivista empatiaa: näyttävää, julkista myötätuntoa, jonka päätehtävänä on osoittaa kuuluvuutta omaan sisäpiiriin ja hankkia siellä statusta.

Koskelan kuva on tästä klassinen esimerkki. Eleganssi, poseeraaminen ja huoliteltu estetiikka yhdistettynä "köyhien" puolustamiseen ei ole sattumaa. Se on viesti omasta asemasta: "Minä olen riittävän valveutunut, riittävän myötätuntoinen ja historian oikealla puolella." Evoluution näkökulmasta tämä on täysin ymmärrettävää, sillä ihminen on sosiaalinen eläin, joka hakee hyväksyntää ja asemaa ryhmässään. Ongelma syntyy, kun tällainen viestintä irtoaa todellisuudesta ja alkaa syrjäyttää konkreettisen politiikan, joka aidosti auttaisi pienituloisia.

Saad on myöhemmin laajentanut ajatusta "itsetuhoiseen empatiaan"(suicidal empathy). Se tarkoittaa tilannetta, jossa empatia vääristyy niin, että se alkaa vahingoittaa koko yhteiskunnan toimivuutta - ja jopa niiden ryhmien pitkän aikavälin etuja, joita sen pitäisi puolustaa. Tämä vinouma syntyy, kun politiikan kieli keskittyy yhä enemmän uhrihierarkioihin ja yhä vähemmän työn, osaamisen ja taloudellisen nousun mahdollistamiseen.

Suomessa tämä näkyy selvästi. Perinteinen teollisuustyöväki on hiljalleen vähentynyt vasemmiston aktiivien ja äänestäjien joukossa. Tilalle on tullut julkisen sektorin ammattilaisia, järjestöväkeä, opiskelijoita ja aktivisteja. "Köyhistä" on tullut enemmän symbolinen kategoria kuin konkreettinen ihmisryhmä, jonka elinoloja pyrittäisiin systemaattisesti parantamaan työn ja talouskasvun avulla.

Lopputulos on teatteria. Budjettikritiikki tiivistyy iskulauseisiin kuten "rikkaat vastaan köyhät", vaikka todelliset ongelmat - kannustinloukut, työn verotus, osaamisvaje ja julkisen sektorin tehottomuus - jäävät sivuosaan. Samalla ihmiset, jotka tekevät raskasta työtä, maksavat veroja ja yrittävät pitää taloutta pystyssä, kokevat yhä vahvemmin, ettei heitä edusteta.

Tämä ei ole vain Suomen ilmiö, vaan sama kehitys on nähtävissä monissa länsimaisissa vasemmistopuolueissa. Kun luokkataistelun korvaa identiteetti- ja uhrikilpailu, ja kun näyttävä hyvesignalointi ohittaa tosiasiat ja talousrealismin, puolue menettää yhteyden niihin, joiden asialla se väittää olevansa.

Todellinen myötätunto ei näy sohvalla poseeraamisena. Se näkyy politiikkana, joka tekee työnteosta kannattavaa, koulutuksesta hyödyllistä ja yrittämisestä mahdollista - myös niille, jotka eivät jo kuulu eliittiin.

How Russia erases nations: by erasing their language.

The oldest tool of empire isn't the tank — it's the ban on your mother tongue. And Moscow has used it for over 160 years.

1863: Russia's Valuev Circular restricts Ukrainian books, declaring a Ukrainian language "never existed, does not exist, and cannot exist." 1876: the Ems Ukaz bans printing Ukrainian books, importing them, even singing Ukrainian songs on stage. From 1865 to 1904, Russia bans Lithuanian in the Latin alphabet and forces Cyrillic — until Lithuanian "book smugglers," the knygnešiai, carry printed words across the border for 40 years and win.

When banning words wasn't enough, Stalin deported whole peoples. The Crimean Tatars — nearly an entire nation — loaded onto cattle trains on 18 May 1944. Chechens, Ingush, Kalmyks, Volga Germans. And the Baltics: on 25 March 1949, tens of thousands of Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians deported to Siberia in a single coordinated sweep. Empty the nation, refill it with settlers.

This is not history. Since 1 September 2022, Russia has imposed its own curriculum in occupied Ukraine, with textbooks claiming Ukrainian statehood and language do not exist. Teachers who keep teaching Ukrainian are threatened and detained. And on 17 March 2023, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and children's-rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova for the unlawful deportation of children from occupied Ukraine to Russia.

The pattern is unchanged: ban the language, deport the people, rewrite the schoolbooks, steal the children. A nation that cannot name itself in its own tongue is easier to swallow.

Which is exactly why the Baltics guard their languages like the borders they are.

You can tell the room is completely on edge from this!

Because they know if he does, his life will be at risk and the Oxford Union may well be at risk too from the supposedly tolerant religion the other side are defending

Such a non-reaction would have been unimaginable before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. There would have been strong measures immediately taken.

Ukrainian Defender Danylo Voronov lost his entire family in a Russian strike on Radushne, Dnipropetrovsk region.

At the moment a Russian ballistic missile hit their home, his parents, seven brothers and sisters, and his 1.5-year-old son, Artem, were inside.

Danylo says Artem was a cheerful little boy who was always smiling and loved pressing the keys of a piano. His family believed he had a gift for music.

This is an unimaginable tragedy.

Deepest condolences to Danylo.
May he find the strength to endure this devastating loss.
