Ben Fry (@benfryc ), the creator of the Knob series, shares his story as a multi-disciplinary designer and 3D artist. Read more below.

With over two decades of professional experience, Ben Fryc is a multi-disciplinary designer who has found his artistic calling in 3D illustration and motion design. His creative journey is a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of design.

Ben's web and graphic design background gradually evolved into product design. Yet, the pandemic marked a transformative moment in his career. He recalls, "I fell in love with 3D and motion design at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020."

Ben's career timeline is marked by inspiring moments of growth and reinvention. He began his creative journey by building websites and print materials in Detroit, Michigan, where he gained inspiration from the vibrant design community on @dribbble. This exposure encouraged him to experiment with his unique style, leading to a successful year-long freelancing stint. However, the pursuit of peace and stability led him back to full-time roles.

During this phase, Twitter became a wellspring of inspiration for him. Sharing his 3D and motion learning journey on this platform brought him recognition from the tech community, eventually propelling him into a Lead 3D Artist role at a social media startup.

Today, Ben is a Staff Designer (3D/Motion) at @Wealthsimple while also dedicating his free time to his exciting side project - KNOB, a low-profile mechanical keyboard set to launch in 2024.

For Ben Fryc, 3D design is not just a creative outlet; it's a reflection of his influences. A product of the 1980s, Ben grew up with the NES, Transformers, and Super Mario Bros, nurturing a dream to create video games. While that path proved elusive in his area, Ben found a fulfilling niche in interactive design.

Collaboration with talented and creative individuals is one of Ben's favorite work experiences. He fondly recalls working with Loom's brand team on a series of animated illustrations for their website. He describes the team as "engaging and fun to work with," a spirit he tries to recreate in all his projects.

3D modeling became a significant part of Ben's life in 2019/2020 when he worked at Mango Languages. Recognizing the need for 3D and motion design, he embarked on a journey from Blender to Cinema4D, falling in love with the latter.

He was inspired by various design backgrounds, including industrial design and interior design, finding that drawing from realistic use cases added clarity to his work. Ben's creative process is marked by a preference for crafting a solid idea from the outset rather than iterating multiple times.

Hailing from Farmington Hills, MI, Ben's greatest 3D aspiration is to create work that inspires others to unlock their creativity. His dream is to make a living exclusively from his own creations, with his Knob Keyboard project being a stepping stone.

Ben's experience with Plasticity is one of exploration and innovation. He dove into the software, leading to the creation of the Knob concept series. He highlights some of Plasticity's standout features, including its ease of performing boolean operations and creating solid geometry, which can be a CPU-intensive task in other software.

As a 3D artist, Ben acknowledges that the initial stages of new projects and collaboration can be challenging, particularly in larger organizations where storytelling and communication play pivotal roles. He attributes the success of his Knob Keyboard project to Plasticity, emphasizing its ease of precision real-world scale modeling.
