Behold, TREES IN MY BACKYARD! The trunks of these cedar(?) trees have tiny xylem that reach from the root systems to the top - and each tiny tube has a minuscule meniscus at the top, indicative of the pressure within the xylem that allows the water to move up the trunk!

We know energy exists because it can be quantified and we can base predictions upon it. As the staff rotates, the head traveling towards the top gains potential energy that is then expended as it travels down. This behavior illustrates the prdictablility of energy.

The decrease in pressure while the valve was open, fueling the BBQ, caused the temperature to fall in the tank. The resulting decrease in molecules and temperature lowered the entropy of the system. As it sits outside, it will heat up and some entropy will return.

One of the primary topics of electrical engineering is power storage and management. Rechargeable ion batteries often have their cases welded with lasers, as it is safer and less wasteful than other methods. Below is a picture of the bead left by a laser welder.

The colorful sheen found on oil slicks or soap bubbles is a type of interference known as thin film interference, where the thin membrane of oil reflects light from the far side that interferes with incoming light. This causes the rainbow patterns to emerge.

Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) was a mathematician who is best known for her pioneering work in computer science; she created the concept of computer code while working on Lord Babbage's proposed Analytic Engine.

If not for the discrimination, I would have voted for Tesla.

Favorite restaurant used to be Marcela's in Pioneer Square, but they closed to the owner could move back to Louisiana. My current favorite restaurant is Gianfranco's in North Bend - awesome little Italian place!

Metal detectors have RLC circuits in the sides with inductors that create magnetic fields. Their instruments are so sensitive that they can detect tiny perturbations in those magnetic fields caused by metal objects passing through them!

The espresso machine at the coffee shop by Union Station heats water by means of a coil that acts as a resistor, converting electric potential energy to thermal energy.

A permanent magnet interacts with iron filings around it by causing them to become polarized. As they polarize, they line up, describing the larger magnet's field. Upon removal of the large magnet, the filings will cease thei magnetic behavior.
