A lot of people have asked me as to where exactly the North Pole and South Pole are located based on conflicting information shown in the series.

This is a very complicated topic, so buckle up! Here's a complete geographical explanation!!

In Chapter 22, Nami showed Luffy and Gaimon a map of the Red Line. In the panel where she depicts it in her head, the map appears to place the Red Line at a slight diagonal incline compared to the North cardinal direction. This has led some fans to think that the Red Line is in fact located at an incline respective to the poles, and that the North Pole itself would be found in, appropriately, the "North Blue", and by that logic the South Pole would be in the South Blue.

In Chapter 1056, Law showed a mental image of the Grand Line in his head, which once again showed it at an incline. This map however already causes some confusion with the previous one, as the direction doesn't quite make sense. Some have tried to justify this by saying that Wano is at the very entrance of the New World to the point that the North Pole would look up right, but this is largely inconsistent with several statements.

Still, admittedly, both of these maps would seem to suggest the idea that the Red Line and Grand Line are diagonal to the Pole axis. The issue is that a few years ago, Oda released his notes for how he designed the One Piece world in one of the One Piece Magazines. And in this extensive map of the world, which is the one I used as reference, Oda doesn't just give the orientation of the world: he gives us the EXACT location of the Poles.

For starters, on the map we see "Hokkyoku" (北極, or North Pole), marked as being found atop the Red Line, between the East and North Blue. Then we see "Nankyoku" (南極, or South Pole), marked on the Red Line as well, between South and West Blue. But beyond these exact coordinates, Oda also includes a very clear compass, which distinctly depicts that in a map drawn in this fashion, North is up, South is down.

But that's not all! Oda even made a drawing of Bluestar's axis respective to the sun and its incline. I've seen some people misinterpret and mislead this drawing as showing that the North Pole is in fact at the top and that the Red Line is tilted according to it, but play close attention to the arrow. The arrow shows the planet very clearly spinning on its axis, and that spinning is on the Red Line and along the equator of the Grand Line. What the inclination here shows isn't respective to the poles, rather it's the inclination respective to the sun. As the number indicates, "23.5", this is the axis tilt that planet Earth also has respective to the Sun. It's the reason why we have seasons, because the Earth (and Bluestar too) has its poles 23.5 degrees inclinated respective to its revolution around the sun, exposing different parts depending on where it is at a time of the year. The drawing next to it even shows the North Pole and South Pole again marked on the Red Line while the incline respective to the sun is depicted diagonally. It's also worth noting that Oda cited this drawing being finished around the Loguetown arc, so this was after he already had drawn Chapter 22 where Nami shows the Red Line tilted, proving and outright stating this isn't a scrapped idea but a genuine blueprint.

Admittedly, the North Pole is slightly more inside the North Blue relative to Reverse Mountain, while the South Pole is towards the side of the South Blue so maybe that's how Oda justified the names of those oceans and may have had some idea of relative incline. But the reality is that Oda's map depicts how he envisions that a map of the One Piece world should be depicted. The panels in Chapters 22 and 1056 do seem to slightly contradict this map, but in the end, when I was drawing my own map of the world, I wanted to respect Oda's original view of how a map should look like. Rather than take an educated guess and placing the North Pole somewhere at random in the middle of the North Blue based on a hypothetical idea suggested by a couple panels, I'd much rather take Oda's exact coordinates which mark it on the map. I'd rather take Oda's actual drawings of how the planet is supposed to spin than once again a vague general idea based on a couple of compasses which could arguably be wrong.

This doesn't necessarily make that interpretation of the poles invalid, because admittedly, there's still a good point to be made. And I imagine that we may not have a definitive answer unless Oda properly speaks up on it! But for the moment being, since I was trying to recreate Oda's vision of a world map, I decided to depict it as he wanted to depict it! I thought long and hard about it, but that was the most logical choice for my map.
