It’s 5:46am on Monday morning.
After a thunderstorm over the Azteca delayed kick off until 2:25am, England have made it through against Mexico on penalties after a nerve-shredding 2-2 draw on 90 minutes ended up 3-3 after extra time.
The final spot-kick, scored by Declan Rice hit the back of the net 29 minutes ago, you’ve left the pub and are walking down the street with the 2nd of two pints you got in at last orders just as extra time ended, the sun is up, you’ve got a Teams meeting scheduled for 10am in which you’ve got to give a 10 minute talk to all 23 people on the call.
You are fully up shit creek and there’s no paddle in sight.

The Fulham game was everything for me.
A win meant we’re back. A loss meant we’re lying to ourselves. I think I’ve got my answer.
Michael Carrick, you’ve changed my life.
I grew up a Federer Nadal fan, so for years I genuinely disrespected Djo. I never liked him and never wanted to give him credit. But watching him now, especially after that interview where he was asked about "chasing" Alcaraz and Sinner, something changed. He pointed out, very calmly, that first he was chasing Federer and now apparently he's chasing players twenty years younger, as if his own career and records don't already exist.
There was no bitterness in how he said it. Just honesty. He's spent his whole career being framed as the one chasing, even though he's built his own history and broken records on his own terms. I don't suddenly love him. But I respect him more than I ever have.
This is what it looks like when greatness outlasts bias.
