Flagged off 6,784 healthcare interns for the 2026/2027 internship cohort, a major milestone in strengthening our health workforce and accelerating the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under the Government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The cohort, which will be deployed across all 47 counties, comprises 875 Medical Officer Interns, 69 Dental Officer Interns, 616 Pharmacist Interns, 2,424 BSc Nursing Officer Interns, 705 BSc Clinical Officer Interns and 2,096 Diploma Clinical Officer Interns.
The Government has committed KSh 9.316 billion to support the programme in the 2026/2027 Financial Year, underscoring one of the largest investments in healthcare workforce development in the country's history.
This achievement demonstrates the strong collaboration between the Ministry of Health, county governments, professional regulatory councils, unions, training institutions and development partners, which has strengthened transparency, accountability and confidence in the internship programme while advancing the UHC Agenda.
As we roll out key health reforms including; the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) Acceleration Plan, the Maternal and Newborn Health Rapid Results Initiative, the Social Health Authority (SHA), health service digitization and quality-of-care improvements, these interns will play a critical role at the frontline of service delivery.
Representing 23% of our healthcare workforce, I urged the interns to serve with professionalism, compassion and integrity, and to help restore public confidence in the health system while improving health outcomes for all Kenyans.
I also reaffirmed the Government's commitment to strengthening the health workforce, including the transition of UHC staff to permanent and pensionable terms, backed by KSh 8.9 billion in the current budget, and plans to recruit 5,000 midwives and nurses under the EWENE initiative to reduce maternal and newborn mortality.
The Ministry remains committed to sustained engagement with all stakeholders and to maintaining a transparent, accountable and credible internship programme that continues to build the future of healthcare in Kenya.
I was flanked at the inauguration ceremony by Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga of Medical Services and Ms. Mary Muthoni of Public Health and Professional Standards, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth alongside CEOs and Chairpersons of various boards and councils, primary heads and representatives of health sector unions as well as senior Ministry officials.
