I’ve spoken to so many self employed people over the last few weeks and month or so, similar age to myself and a little older, that are calling it a day end of the year or as soon as they can in early 2026
These people are in various different industries, employ many people and all say the exact same thing
‘There is simply no point any more!’
There is literally no money to be made. It’s a complete waste of time. The risk and stress involved is simply not worth it and the avalanche of auto enrolment/wage increase in January will just crucify them.
Congratulations @MichealMartinTD@SimonHarrisTD@fiannafailparty & @FineGael
It appears you are getting exactly what you have wished for, for Christmas
Big Mike’s – A Closing Note
Sunday was our last service at Big Mike’s
This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write. It feels like failure, but it isn’t. We’re proud of what we achieved, we shot for the stars, poured everything into it — heart, soul, sweat, tears, life savings, even the house deposit — but the brutal truth is the maths just don’t math anymore.
The industry is facing unsurmountable challenges.
We gave it our very best
I’m proud of my team, grateful to our guests, suppliers and FWBs all of whom have been incredibly understanding.
My final act as gaffer is to go to bat for my staff so they land safely in new homes and ensure they are fully supported. Many of them have been with me a long time and I’m determined to assist them moving forward.
I’ve written a full note with all the details — regarding vouchers, reservations, a heartfelt thanks and what’s next……

‘People don’t just want dinner – they want an occasion’: Restaurants share their secrets to survival
In a notoriously tough industry, some restaurants manage to ride out recessions, pandemics and cost-of-living crises. What’s their secret sauce?

A pub isn't just about having a pint.
In the UK 3.6 million people suffer from chronic loneliness.
Pubs are at the heart of our communities.
A place for friends and family to come together.
Strangers to become friends.
We must do all we can to protect them.
Dear Irish politicians.
Em, just wondering when ye plan on forming a government. Don’t mean to rush ye or anything. But it’s been about 5 weeks since the general elections and you were all kinda saying that you were gonna do wonders for small businesses and whilst yer still showing no sign of forming a government, we’re kinda still trying to keep our heads above water and keep the doors open
Just wondering if ye were serious about saving so many employers in this country or was it just a kinda thing you said for votes
But don’t worry. No rush, we’ll just keep on battling away I guess
I just watched a man carry a screaming toddler across the parking lot.
He noticed me looking at him and said, "He's mine, I'm not stealing him."
And then, before I could reply, he added, "If I was gonna take one, it definitely wouldn't be this one".
LOL.
@adriancummins@cathmartingreen The Irish Pub /Restaurant is in the top 5 visitor attractions…@cathmartingreen
We provide excellent hospitality , Sunday trad sessions & blood sweat & tears !
How dare you say we are ‘not part of the Department of Tourism Remit’
Walk in our shoes for a week !!
According to Ireland’s Minister for Tourism @cathmartingreen , Irish Pubs and Restaurants are “not part of the Department of Tourism remit “
What a load of nonsense !!
In 30 years of working in the industry, I’ve never heard such rubbish.
Roll on the General Election 🗳️

Charging 4 times the normal price for a hotel room in Dublin trying to premote ireland as a destination is not my Hospitality. Split the vat a rate now restaurants in rural Ireland are being destroyed. #Vat9 restaurants.
Just went to book a Dublin restaurant for the nights of the #Oasis concerts.
Same price as the weeks before and after and it’s the same with hairdressers too.
Maybe it’s time to stop lumping struggling service industries into the same VAT category as profitable hotel groups?
🚨OMG Another great restaurant closes
Hooked Barna Galway
Minister @jackfchambers , your Dublin officials might not know where Barna is, but if a restaurant on the Wild Atlantic Way closes in July - there is something seriously broken with the industry
Reinstate the 9% Vat
