I'm just starting "Farewell Aylis" as my book for Azerbaijan. It's a collection of novellas, including one called "Stone Dreams." Publication of "Stone Dreams" lead to book burnings, Aylisli's arrest, and a politician offering a $10,000 bounty for his ear.

For Burkina Faso, I read "The Parachute Drop." It's a political satire about an African dictator by assassinated author/journalist Norbert Zongo.

Update: I really enjoyed "Abai"! It's as much about the Kazakh people and their way of life as it is about any one character. If you're looking for Central Asian classics (niche, I know) it's up there on the list!

Obergefell is the basis of marriage for many immigrants who can otherwise be deported to countries where being queer is in fact illegal and may also carry the death penalty.

So maybe don't say that
