NATO intelligence chief says Russia is preparing to attack submarine cables in the EU

Russia is preparing for an attack on NATO's submarine infrastructure. For this purpose, the Russian leadership is studying the alliance's underwater systems, said David Cutler, the bloc's assistant secretary general for intelligence and security. This is reported by Bloomberg.

According to Cutler, Russia is mapping critical allied infrastructure both on land and underwater, he said. This is how Moscow is preparing for strikes against submarine targets in Europe and North America. Russian military and special services take part in the operation, he added.

The Assistant Secretary General of NATO reminded that this is how Russia fights in the early stages of the conflict - it aims to destroy critical infrastructure. Moscow used this tactic in the war against Ukraine.

Cutler noted that it is about submarine cables, which account for 95% of Internet communications. They allow for about $10 trillion worth of financial transactions every day.
