A former Japanese official who was personally involved in the Mumbai Ahmedabad Shinkansen project has expressed deep anguish over its setbacks.
He criticises the Indian side’s repeated recklessness, breaking promises, flipping positions at the last minute, and prioritising self interest till the end.
He notes that even the minister in charge was particularly difficult, making decent negotiations nearly impossible.
Despite Japanese teams pouring their hearts into the project, he is 100% convinced that the lack of progress is entirely on the Indian side.
Prime Minister Takaichi’s recent visit also yielded no breakthrough. Japan has now been excluded from the signal system, the critical safety backbone, according to Toyo Keizai Online.
This is profoundly disappointing for a flagship India Japan collaboration. Reliable execution and keeping commitments are essential if we want such high impact infrastructure projects to succeed.

The bridge on the right is the Wakankar Bridge. Since it was getting old, it was decided to construct a new bridge "parallel to it", a standard engineering practice.
However, as per a report by Dainik Bhaskar the new bridge (left) was tilted by 30 to 35 degrees during construction, allegedly going against the approval. This drastic mid-project change was made allegedly to protect private land owned by influential individuals, extending the bridge's length by nearly 100 meters.
This modification has triggered a costly domino effect on local public infra. The new 35-degree alignment now cuts directly through the center of a ₹2.5 crore Smart City parking lot built just four years ago, effectively ruining the facility. Consequently, the Smart City team must now find alternative land to replace the parking space, while the total project cost has climbed to nearly ₹65 crore.
Following the backlash, the Chief Engineer of Setu Nigam has promised an on-site inspection to investigate the revised design and hold the responsible officials accountable.
"Exploitation happened 700 years ago, so give me reservation for the next 7000 or 70,000 years! I won't study, sir, I want to become a doctor, engineer without studying! This is nonsense!"

He handed over a Rs 100 note to the conductor, who asked for exact change. When the minister replied he did not have any, the conductor showed his cash bag, saying he too did not have sufficient change, and told the minister to get down if he could not tender exact change.
He suspended a driver and conductor.

Say NO to colonial-era judicial worship.
Say NO to referring to judges as “Your Honour” or “My Lord.” They are servants of the Indian judiciary and should instead be addressed as “Judicial Servant.”
Every lawyer should refer to judges as “Judicial Servant” and break these stereotypes and colonial-era norms.
Every citizen is equal in the eyes of the Indian Constitution. No one is a lord or above the Constitution.
Thank you, our hero, Prabal Pratap, for calling the judiciary what it actually is: “Mr. Judicial Servant.”
